O is for Orgasm. | Thought Leader

Since it is the holiday season and because so many people have assured me that I am ?shrill?, ?aggressive?, ?in need of a good fuck?, et al ? none of which I accept, by the way ? I thought I would give those who feel victimised by the matter of white privilege and racism a break and share my other passion with them instead ? which? is none other than the pleasures of the text, the pleasure of the body and the right of all human beings to access and experience that pleasure.

I recently had the pleasure of conducting an interview with Nawal El Saadawi, a dynamic 80-year-old revolutionary and author from Egypt. El Saadawi was on the forefront of the recent Egyptian revolution and was often seen on the news with fire in her eyes, her silver hair in two plaits, condemning the old regime and speaking for women?s rights in the sustained wave of civil disobedience, which she says she dreamed of when she was a child. We spoke politics before I asked the question that had been burning in my breast since hearing her talk about the ?pleasure of writing? at the opening ceremony of the African Women?s Writers symposium held in Johannesburg last year.

?Is there such a thing as the orgasm of writing,? I asked her.

El Saadawi?s eyes lit up. ?Ah the orgasm of writing ? yes ? writing is more pleasurable than sex or food. I?m telling you it is. When I am caught up in the writing process I forget about sex and food and all those other pleasures because the orgasm of writing is so much more pleasurable to me.?

I was delighted and relieved at her response because somehow, being privy to this orgasmic phenomenon comes with a sense of madness and any mention of it on a public forum is usually met with an embarrassed silence or outright derision from both male and female dissenters. I am not sure if there is a general silence around the topic of orgasm or if the notion of orgasm/mind just does not feature in mainstream thinking, other than as pornographic imagery. But for me writing is not simply typing on a keyboard. I do my best writing when I am lying in a hot bath in a sort of semi-trance where ideas and narratives proliferate at an alarming rate. Sometimes when talking or walking or watching other people?s works I will enter a state of inner ecstasy as a fountain of creative ideas unleash themselves into my body. It is that rush of creativity that shoots through the spinal chord and out the top of my head, tickles my solar plexus, bubbles in my belly and electrifies my synapses. It is when my stomach fills itself with a rumbling mirth and I belly-laugh at my own offbeat thoughts. Sure it is not the thrusting, grinding, breath-of-fire type orgasm that great sex may bring on, or that joyous abandon that occurs when that tiny portal to pleasure, the clitoris, is being teased and cajoled and stroked orally with the precision to which she should be accustomed. Rather, the orgasm of writing is akin to that sensation that is concentrated in the 8?000 nerve endings contained within that blissful clitoral universe the goddess of play bestowed upon the fairer sex ? only it dances all over the trinity of body, mind and soul. It is the playful stimulation of the brain and is nothing less than the sensation of some sort of Tantric cunnilingus on the inside of my head. Excruciatingly delicious and yet endurable, it lasts a lot longer than the clitoral/penile orgasm. In fact, it is a way of life if you choose it to be.

As foreign to logic as this may be, it is entirely possible to live in this realm of play ? a state that comes with plenty of perks too. For example, if you are able to sustain this generally orgasmic subsistence, dreary human foibles such as depression, anxiety and melancholy are simply evicted. They cannot endure all that happiness inside your head or that deep tickle in your being. They simply up and leave, and try as you might, it is impossible to get them to take up residence again. In my occasional darker moments I have sometimes bemoaned the fact that I can no longer access those long self-indulgent days of lying on the couch crying and writhing in divine angst, or staring mournfully out of the window wondering how one can be capable of such intense wretchedness. Those days are over. And this ecstatic state is not that type of euphoria that can take leave at any moment, plummeting me to the depths of a self-loathing hell. This is not a manic state of being. Rather it is a sustained-release state of being and yes, it is an orgasmic state of being.

Although embodied, it is a pleasure that is directly rooted in language in a way that subverts the symbolic order of logic. It is a revolutionary inspired and jouissant language that does not dwell in the duality between mind/logic and body/irrational. Literary theorist Roland Barthes expresses this sensual phenomenon in his seminal text A Lover?s Discourse when he writes, ?Language is a skin: I rub my language against the other. It is as if I had words instead of fingers, or fingers at the tip of my words. My language trembles with desire. The emotion derives from a double contact: on the one hand, a whole activity of discourse discreetly, indirectly focuses upon a single signified, which is ?I desire you?, and releases, nourishes, ramifies it to the point of explosion (language experiences orgasm upon touching itself); on the other hand, I enwrap the other in my words, I caress, brush against, talk up this contact, I extend myself to make the commentary to which I submit the relation endure.?

Credit Got You Down? Try These Credit Restoration Tips! - Best ...

TIP! If you and your creditor decided to set up a payment plan, you should first get the details of the plan in written form. You want documentation to back yourself up so there will be no problems in the future, and if the company owner changes you will have more of a chance of keeping your plan.

The ramifications of having a bad credit score are frustrating to deal with. Poor financial decisions from years ago can continue to influence your financial well-being in the present. Even though rebuilding your credit can be hard, it is possible. Keep reading for more helpful tips.

If a company or collector threatens you, take a record of it because it is illegal. You are protected by law, and you need to know that.

Credit Score

TIP! Check your credit card carefully each month to ensure that there?s no incorrect information. if you find any, then you need to get in touch with the company right away so this does not become a blemish on your credit record.

You can keep your interest rates lower by working to keep your credit score as high as possible. Lower interest rates will reduce the amount of your monthly payment, and can also make it easier to repay your debt faster. Receiving competitive credit rates and good offers are important in having credit that you can pay off easily, and that will get you a great credit score.

TIP! Continuously maintaining a bank account is a great way to show credit worthiness. Open accounts that are used regularly will demonstrate your financial income and ability to pay off bills on time.

The worst part of a credit crisis may be the collection agencies. Debtors can stop harassment by collection agencies with cease and desist notices, but know that this is all they do. Letters such as these prevent calls from collections agencies, but the consumer must still pay the debts under dispute.

TIP! Do not do things which could cause you to go to jail. There are schemes online that will show you how to establish an additional credit file.

If you are on the road to trying to improve your credit, make sure you don?t let too many companies view your credit score too often. A report of inquiries to your credit score is noted on your credit report.

TIP! When trying to rebuild or improve your credit score, look into credit cards and also loans. These varying types are all a part of the calculation of your credit score.

Make sure to check all three of your credit reports, and pay extra attention to the negative reports when you are working on repairing bad credit. The debt itself may be legitimate, but if you find errors in its metadata (e.g. the date, amount, creditor name), you might be able to get the whole entry deleted.

TIP! Getting home finance can be quite tough when your credit rating is not good. You should consider getting a FHA loan they are backed by the government.

If you have credit cards where the balance is more than half of your credit limit, pay these down right away. When your debt is over 50%, credit ratings usually go down. With that said, try to spread out the debt that you have or try paying it off.

TIP! If you see errors on your credit reports, dispute them with the credit agency. Send a letter to all agencies involved.

Making monthly credit payments in a timely manner is one of the best ways to build your credit score. At least pay the minimum, but always send in something. Just one missed payment will put a dent in your rebuilding efforts.

Credit Score

TIP! Opening additional lines of credit will negatively affect your credit score. Fight the overwhelming urge to say yes to a new credit card when it is offered to you at store checkouts, even if there is a large discount offered.

You will be able to buy a house and finance it if you maintain a good credit rating. Staying current with your mortgage payments is a way to raise your credit score even more. Home ownership also means you have assets that you can rely on to increase your credit score. This will be useful in case you need to borrow money.

TIP! If you find that you have a credit card and the interest rate has gotten to high, you do have the option to not pay the debt, though there will be consequences. Creditors who charge exorbitant interest may be just a law suit away from having to wipe the slate clean.

Joining a credit union may be a way to boost your credit score when you are having a hard time getting credit. They might be able to provide you with several more options at better rates than banks, since they work locally as opposed to nationally.

TIP! If you are currently spending more than you earn, you need to quit that immediately. You you need to rewire your thought process.

Do not file for bankruptcy. Bankruptcy will be noted on the credit report for 10 years, afterwards you must rebuild from scratch. Bankruptcy not only zeros out your debt, it also zeros out your credit score. You may never get a line of credit for any purchases you might need to make if you go ahead, give up on repairing your credit and file for bankruptcy.

TIP! Start paying on bills to help your credit. More precisely, you must begin paying your bills fully and on time.

Maintain a log of every attempt you make to rectify erroneous information from your credit report. Keep track of all your contacts, including emails and letters, and the information pertaining to any phone calls. Make sure you mail your dispute letters through certified mail, so you have ample proof that it was mailed and received.

TIP! If you need to repair your credit score, you should pay your credit card balances as fast as possible. Pay down credit cards that have the highest amount owed, or the highest interest rates.

Using this advice can assist you in getting your ideal credit score. Being consistent in the process and honoring your obligations are the most important things to remember. Clawing back from a credit disaster is doable, so stop making excuses and start today!

China's 'Beijing Blues' wins at Taiwan film fest

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) ? China's "Beijing Blues" won the best film award Saturday and Hong Kong's Johnnie To took home the best director's award at Taiwan's Golden Horse Film Festival, an event considered the Chinese-language Oscars.

"Beijing Blues" portrays the lives of the urban dwellers through the work of a squad of plainclothes crime-hunters.

In receiving the award, director Gao Qun Shu was visibly shocked, and he thanked the "globe" for giving an inexperienced director like him such honor and recognition.

To won best director for "Life Without Principle" about ordinary citizens in Hong Kong who are caught in the fallout of the global financial meltdown.

The film also won veteran Hong Kong actor Lau Ching Wan the best actor's award for his portrayal of a triad thug seeking to recover money lost in a loan shark scheme.

Lau said he was happy to receive the award "even though you don't act in order to win an award."

Taiwan's Gwei Lun-mei won the best actress award for portraying a woman involved in a romantic triangle in "GF-BF" or "Girlfriend-Boyfriend."

She burst into tears on receiving the award after beating out hot contenders including Hao Lei and Bai Bai He, both of China.

China's Liang Jing won the best supporting actress award for playing a toothy midwife harpy in "Design of Death."

Best supporting actor went to Hong Kong's Ronald Cheng for his role in "Vulgaria" about the financial capital's struggling film industry.

Controversial Chinese director Lou Ye did not receive the widely expected award for directing box-office hit "Mystery." But at the ceremony, Lou received a rare mention for eventually directing a movie that was screened in Chinese theatres.

"Mystery" ? about a woman's radical revenge after uncovering her husband's infidelity ? is seen as marking Lou's entry into the commercial mainstream after years on the social and artistic edge.

Lou's films have long focused on sensitive subjects like sex, violence and politics, and have repeatedly been censored by China's cultural authorities.

A special award for outstanding movie worker was presented to Huang Yu-siang, a 25-year-old blind Taiwanese pianist in real life, for his first movie shot in Taiwan's "Touch of The Light," about young artists pursuing their dreams.

Big Data to Create 960K New IT Jobs in APAC by 2015: Gartner

As more enterprises invest in big data, 960,000 new IT jobs will be created in the Asia-Pacific region in the next three years, but only one-third of these big data roles will be filled due to a skills shortage, according to a Gartner analyst.

Speaking at Gartner's annual Symposium/ITxpo on the Gold Coast, Gartner senior vice president and global head of research Peter Sondergaard told delegates that governments and organisations in the APAC region will need to focus on big data education and skills development, such as data science, to remain competitive.

How the New "Medicare Tax" Will Affect Your Real Estate Investments

by Jason Jenkins, Investment U Research
Friday, October 12, 2012

If you?ve read any of my articles recently, you probably know how I feel about the current opportunity in real estate.

We have seen that it does have legs through the latest numbers ? and with the actions of some of the biggest players in the investment world. So I would be remiss not to follow up on any prevalent developments in the industry.

One of the ways to take advantage of the rebound is through the purchase of real estate itself. Right now, there?s a strong case for being a landlord. As I have mentioned in previous articles, homebuilders have seen a run-up in 2012, and according to some measures, home valuations are near a 14-year low. That still presents itself as an opportunity.

But here?s something that any current or future real estate investor must keep in mind:

The housing market may have bottomed out, but what?s very ambiguous right now is what part taxes will play in selling homes?

Where the New ?Medicare Tax? Comes into Play

In order to help fund the Affordable Healthcare Act (or Obamacare), the legislation instituted a 3.8% surtax that would apply to many kinds of investment income. And as it would happen, it affects all the different kinds of investment income we?ve been promoting in this market like interest, dividends, rents and capital gains.

As far as real estate is concerned, many experts believe that it won?t have a far-reaching impact in the industry as most feared.

However, it could be a serious blow to many investors. Specifically, the law could have a profound affect on those investors who made a hefty profit or those who made some large gains from the sale of a vacation home or investment property.

Nobody Said it Was Easy?

When have laws involving taxes or investments ever been easy for us laymen to understand? But here?s what we do know:

  • The Medicare tax will hit individual filers who make more than $200,000 in adjusted gross income (AGI), and married couples with an AGI over $250,000.
  • These AGI numbers are not indexed for inflation, so this could affect more investors in the future.
  • The tax will apply to the smaller amount between either your net investment income or the amount that your AGI is over the above thresholds.

And About Your Primary Residence?

If you file as an individual and sell your primary residence for less than a gain of $250,000, that?s considered ?excluded income.? The same applies for married couples if the gain is less than $500,000. Anything that isn?t included as taxable income also isn?t included in the whole Medicare tax equation.

Long story short: The Medicare tax will affect those higher-income earners whose real estate investment profits aren?t protected by the aforementioned exclusions.

What About Vacation Homes?

Be careful of vacation homes. They aren?t primary residences so any gain would be added to your AGI. This could possibly push you over AGI limits. The Medicare tax would apply to any excess income over that limit.

If you rent your vacation home, the rental income becomes taxable if it?s rented for more than 14 days. If you exceed those 14 days, the rent paid ? subtract any expenses ? is considered taxable income.

For investment properties, rents collected minus expenses must be considered investment income. This may make you subject to the tax.

Here?s a ?word to the wise.? It?s okay to buy into the real estate rebound. But if you?re diving in by getting your hands dirty as a property manager, do your due diligence. You may also want to talk to a trusted tax adviser.

Good Investing,

Jason

"Shamoon" virus most destructive yet for private sector, Panetta says

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The "Shamoon" virus that attacked Saudi Arabia's state oil company, ARAMCO, was probably the most destructive attack the business sector has seen to date, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said on Thursday.

Addressing business leaders in New York, Panetta described the virus as sophisticated and noted that a similar attack days later struck Qatar's natural gas firm, Rasgas.

"More than 30,000 computers that it infected (at ARAMCO) were rendered useless, and had to be replaced," he said.

He said Shamoon included a routine called a "wiper," coded to self-execute, which replaced crucial system files with an image of a burning U.S. flag. It also overwrote all the real data on the machine with what he called garbage data.

"Imagine the impact an attack like this would have on your company," Panetta said, as he called for steps to bolster the nation's cyber defenses.

In his speech, Panetta also cited recent denial-of-service attacks against major U.S. banks, which delayed or disrupted services on customer websites.

"While this kind of tactic isn't new, the scale and speed with which it happened was unprecedented," he said.

One U.S. official, briefing reporters before the speech on condition of anonymity, said the United States knew who carried out the attacks cited in Panetta's speech, but declined to disclose that information.

Daily Kos: ND-Sen: Rep. Rick Berg (R. Goldmark)

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

So we've heard a lot about Goldman Sachs and Bain Capital over these past four years. ?But now get ready to hear about another slimy, greedy company that has brought misery to others. ?It's called Goldmark Property Management and it's the top donor to North Dakota GOP Senate candidate, Rick Berg.

First off, for those of you not familiar with Republican Senate candidate, Rick Berg, let me fill you in on some info. ?Berg served in the North Dakota House of Representatives from 1985-2011. ?Berg was House Majority Leader from 2003-2011. ?Berg then defeated nine term Congressman, Earl Pomeroy (D) during the 2010 mid-term elections. ?During his time in the North Dakota House, Berg voted with a minority of the state house to make terminating a pregnancy illegal, in a bill that only made exception for when the life of the mother is endangered. ?You can read about the legislation here:

http://www.buzzfeed.com/...

So Berg is another anti-choice extremist in the War On Women like Todd Akin in Missouri, Tommy Thompson in Wisconsin and Tom Smith in Pennsylvania. ?He was a big fan of George W. Bush's plan to privative Social Security back in 2005:

Did you also know that he's the 13th wealthiest member of congress who's worth up to $54 million dollars? ?Now you do. ?How do he make that much money? ?From helping find a real estate company known as Goldmark Schlossman Commercial Real Estate Services now known as Goldmark Property Management. ?Salon did a piece on Berg's connections with Goldmark and it's quite an interesting read:

http://www.salon.com/...

Berg's challenger, former Attorney General Heidi Heitkamp (D. ND) has been bitting Berg hard in her campaign ads regarding Berg's connection to Goldmark and it's something that could very well sink Berg's campaign:

The company, Goldmark Property Management, had earned a bad reputation in the state, along with tenant complaints, citations for alleged fire safety violations, and a C - rating from the Better business Bureau. - Salon, 9/25/12
Goldmark has donated at least $17,500 to Berg?s Senate campaign and has donated $20,000 to Senate Republicans. ?Golmark employees also donate $28,000 dollars to Berg's 2010 House campaign and Berg has also emphasized about his business record on his own Senate website:

http://www.bergfornorthdakota.com/...

With nothing more than a loan, a vision, and a lot of hard work, what began as a business idea among friends grew into what is now Goldmark Schlossman Commercial Real Estate Services.
Heitkamp's latest radio ad highlights one case where Goldmark sent a collections agent after a soldier deployed abroad. ?Berg claims the ad is "100 percent false" and that he has had no involvement with with Goldmark and that he only founded the precursor company, Midwest Management Company, but left the company several years before the company changed it's name to Goldmark:
According to Berg, he founded the company that proceeded Goldmark Property Management, but left several years before it changed its name to Goldmark. A few years after that, he helped found Goldmark Schlossman Commercial Real Estate Services. As Politico?s John Bresnahan reported last week, the two companies share a name, address, phone number, office space and many of the same officers and employees. Berg insists the two companies have no ?legal affiliation.? - Salon, 9/25/12
Goldmark Property Management?s website listed Berg as a senior vice president but for some strange reason, Berg's name was taken off the website. ?Here's a screenshot from the Salon article that proves though he was listed as V.P. of Goldmark on their website:

Rick Berg's Goldmark Property Management Profile, In August of 2012, Goldmark Property Management deleted Berg's personal biography on their website. In 1982, Berg helped found, was director and part shareholder of Goldmark Property Management.

Salon points out this interesting fact from Berg's deleted bio from the Goldmark website and some other interesting facts:

?Rick has been with GOLDMARK since its inception in 1981.? Berg has acted as a public spokesman for the company in the past, and on a 2000 campaign donation, he listed ?Goldmark Property Management? as his employer. The Berg campaign now says this was a clerical error. - Salon, 9/25/12
So Berg, like Mitt Romney, loves to tout his business record to help him get elected. The big difference between Berg and Romney is Romney lied about how long he worked at Bain while Berg brags about his co-finding Goldmark but then tries to distance himself from the controversial company he helped create. ?But don't worry, Berg's time at Goldmark along with their generous donations to Berg's past campaigns have had no influence on how he drafted legislation in the North Dakota House of Representatives... NOT!!!!! ?Read on:
And judging by Berg?s record in the state Legislature, it?s not hard to see why they invested in him. According to legislative records, Berg introduced numerous bills as a member of the state House of Representatives and state Senate to give landlords more rights over their tenants in ways that could possibly benefit both Goldmark companies and thus Berg. In 1985, he sponsored a bill that would raise the amount landlords could charge a for security deposit, from one month?s rent to one and half month?s rent, and made it easier for them to keep security deposits.

In 1989, he introduced a bill that would have made it easier for landlords to evict tenants by allowing the proceedings to go through small claims court. ?That bill failed with zero yea votes, 101 nays and five absentees. That same year, he introduced a separate bill to make it easier for landlords to evict tenants by holding them responsible for ?indirect? actions. ?It was ultimately vetoed by the governor, who said it was too ambiguous and ?could lead to abuse by both landlords and other tenants.? ?Another bill introduced that year raised the amount of property left on the premises by tenants that landlords could keep or dispose of ?without legal process.?

In 1991, Berg introduced a bill that would have made it possible for a landlord to evict a tenant if they or a guest ?act[ed] in a manner that disturbs other tenants? peaceful enjoyment of the premises.? Two years later, he introduced a bill that would have made evicted tenants ?liable for rent during the remainder of the term of the lease.?

A raft of other bills would do favorable things for the real estate industry, such as prohibiting rent control, exempting real estate agents from some workers compensation requirements, and exempting new construction from property taxes for two years. - Salon, 9/25/12

So Berg is a fan of allowing landlords be huge assholes to their tenants and evicting hard working people for bull shit reasons. ?It sure would suck to have Rick Berg as a landlord. ?Especially if you're a deployed troop fighting for his country. ?Now to be fair, Salon points out that Berg was not working at either Goldmark Schlossman or Goldmark Property Management while serving in the North Dakota House of Representatives but they bring up a great point:
But considering his past and future involvement in the real estate industry, it seems reasonable to assume that he maintained close ties with executives at Goldmark who would benefit from this legislation, and that he might have indirectly benefited himself once he started Goldmark Schlossman in 1996. - Salon, 9/25/12
? ?
Berg does not represent the people of North Dakota. ?He is the puppet for the real estate business and the representative from Goldmark. ?Imagine the type of legislation he could propose and author if he is in the Senate, especially if the GOP won control of the Senate this year. ?Berg is a self-serving member of the 1%. ?Heidi Heitkamp is a real public servant and truly represents the people of North Dakota. ?There's no way in hell President Obama is going to win North Dakota. ?N.D. is pure red but has elected Democratic Senators like Byron Dorgan who voted against the repeal of Glass-Steagall and warned us of the consequences the repeal would have on the economy. ?Deficit hawk, Kent Conrad, is retiring this year and as pistolSO has pointed out that Heitkamp's win means progress:

http://www.dailykos.com/...

Republicans may outnumber Democrats in registration but we have the better candidate who is well-known and well-liked. ?Before Heitkamp entered the race, it looked like Berg was poised for victory but now this race is a Toss Up and Heitkamp has run an amazing campaign. ?Berg is just another tea party nut job who voted for Vice Presidential nominee, Paul Ryan's (R) budget that ends medicare as we know it. ?This race is so close that the NRSC, Karl Rove and the Koch Brothers have to spend a lot of money on their own turf. ?North Dakota is a split ticket race just Dr. Richard Carmona in Arizona, Joe Donnelly in Indiana, Claire McCaskill's in Missouri, Jon Tester in Montana and Joe Manchin in West Virginia. ?The majority of voters in North Dakota have made up their mind about who they will vote for in the Presidential election but The majority of voters in North Dakota aren't so sure that Rick berg would make a great Senator. ?Lets help the good people of North Dakota make the right decision and vote in Heidi Heitkamp to the U.S. Senate:

Little Ice Age led to migration of island hopping arctic foxes

Wednesday, September 12, 2012

The Little Ice Age allowed a new wave of arctic foxes to colonise Iceland, according to new research.

A "bridge" of sea ice appeared during a dip in temperatures between 200 to 500 years ago allowing arctic foxes to migrate to Iceland from different Arctic regions including Russia, North America and Greenland.

The research, led by scientists at Durham University, UK, said their findings showed the importance of sea ice in creating and maintaining the genetic population of the arctic fox across the polar regions where the animal is found.

The multi-disciplinary approach used for this project could also be used to track the migration of other animals found on remote islands, the researchers said.

While Iceland's approximately 10,000 strong arctic fox population is not at risk, the researchers added that increasing isolation from the rest of the Arctic, caused by warmer temperatures and a lack of sea ice, could further differentiate the island's population from their mainland relatives.

Ancient arctic foxes also crossed sea ice during previous ice ages to reach Iceland well before human settlement in the 9th Century. Warmer temperatures then melted the sea ice and isolated the ancient foxes on the island before the Little Ice Age reconnected Iceland to the mainland.

The Little Ice Age saw temperatures plummet in the 16th to 19th Centuries across large parts of Europe and North America in particular, and rivers such as the Thames were frequently frozen enough to support ice skating and winter festivals.

The researchers analysed DNA samples from ancient remains of Icelandic arctic foxes dating from two late 9th to 12th Century archaeological sites and compared the findings to DNA data from their modern successors.

They found that the ancient foxes shared a single genetic signature, while the modern population possesses five unique signatures.

The researchers were able to rule out different explanations for the increase in the amount of variation of the ancient foxes, including geographic reasons and breeding between farmed and wild arctic foxes.

The team concluded that the most likely explanation for the boom in genetic diversity among arctic foxes was migration across sea ice that formed during the Little Ice Age.

The research, partly funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), is published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B - Biological Sciences.

Senior author Dr Greger Larson, in Durham University's Department of Archaeology, said: "During the Little Ice Age there was a great deal more sea ice in the North Atlantic than there is today and during the late 18th and 19th centuries sea ice routinely grounded on Iceland.

"Even today arctic foxes routinely travel hundreds of miles across sea ice and once the ice bridge was in place, they easily crossed the North Atlantic and were able to arrive on Iceland, increasing the genetic diversity of the population.

"To paraphrase Dr Ian Malcolm in Jurassic Park, 'Life will always find a way', and in this case, once the Little Ice Age began, arctic foxes didn't need much of an opportunity to colonise Iceland."

Dr Larson added that potential for animal migration had decreased significantly during the 20th Century, a trend which global warming had accelerated.

He said: "Without the sea ice, there will be no new fox migrants and thus the Icelandic population will continue to diverge from their mainland relatives."

Dr Larson added that the model the research used to determine the genetic diversity of the arctic fox could also be used to track the historical migration of other animals such as reindeer that are also found on Iceland.

Human Embryonic Stem Cells Restore Gerbil Hearing

A new study offers proof that stem cells can reconnect the inner ear to the brain

By Virginia Gewin of Nature magazine

More than 275 million people have moderate-to-profound hearing loss, and many of those cases are caused by a breach in the connection between the inner ear and the brain.

Researchers have now shown how to repair a key component of that connection ? the auditory nerve ?? by using human embryonic stem cells to restore hearing in gerbils. "We have the proof of concept that we can use human embryonic stem cells to repair the damaged ear," says lead author Marcelo Rivolta, a stem-cell biologist at the University of Sheffield, UK, whose research appears in Nature today. "More work needs to be done, but now we know it's possible."

Stem cells have been differentiated into auditory nerve cells before, but this is the first time that transplanted cells have successfully restored hearing in animals. Some in the field say that it is a pivotal step that will undoubtedly spur more research. ?Research has been stymied by reviewers wanting evidence that stem cells can connect the inner ear to the central nervous system,? says Richard Altschuler, a developmental biologist at the Kresge Hearing Research Institute at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Rivolta has spent the past decade developing ways to differentiate human embryonic stem cells into the two cell types that are essential for hearing: auditory neurons, and the inner-ear hair cells that translate sound into electrical signals.

He treated human embryonic stem cells with two types of fibroblast growth factor (FGF) ? FGF3 and FGF10 ? to produce two, visually distinct, groups of primordial sensory cell. Those that had characteristics similar to hair cells were dubbed otic epithelial progenitors (OEPs), and those that looked more like neurons were dubbed otic neural progenitors (ONPs).

His team then transplanted ONPs into the ears of gerbils that had been treated with ouabain, a chemical that damages auditory nerves, but not hair cells. Ten weeks after the procedure, some of?the transplanted cells had grown projections that formed connections to the brain stem. Subsequent testing showed that many of the animals could hear much fainter sounds after transplantation, with an overall improvement in hearing of 46%.

Hear this
Rivolta?s findings ? along with a study published in July showing that gene therapy can restore hearing in deaf-born mice ? reinforce a spate of studies demonstrating that stem cells and gene therapy can restore sensory functions, including smell (see 'Gene therapy restores sense of smell to mice') and vision (see 'Regenerative medicine repairs mice from top to toe').

The advances are exciting, says John Brigande, a developmental biologist at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland who has a progressive form of hearing loss and is exploring stem-cell-based approaches to restore auditory function. He notes, however, that because the ?exquisite architecture? of the inner ear can be damaged in many different ways, ?there won?t be one cure for hearing loss, there will be a variety of interventions tailored to unique conditions?.

The number of people who might benefit from a stem-cell-driven increase in auditory neurons remains unclear, but stem cells could broaden the reach of existing therapies. ?Because functioning auditory neurons are necessary for cochlear implants to work, stem cells open a candidate pool that cannot yet be helped,? says Altschuler.

The first treatments for hearing could take at least 15 years to develop, says Stefan Heller, a stem-cell researcher at Stanford University in California who is working on other ways to differentiate stem cells into hair cells and support cells. ?The next goals of any protocol are to gain higher levels of efficiency and reproducibility, determine protocol safety and confirm that transplantation leads to prolonged recovery,? says Heller. ?Then we can think about patients.?

"Gone With the Wind" trademark and literary rights gifted to Catholic ...

The Catholic Church has been given a large gift in another state. The nephew of "Gone With the Wind" author Margaret Mitch has gifted 50 percent of the rights to the trademark and literary rights to the Archdiocese of Atlanta. Although this gift doesn't include rights to the film, it could still be work hundreds of thousands of dollars each year.

The gift of these rights shows how people can gift more than just money in a bank account using estate planning. People in New Jersey and across the country can gift rights for certain assets that might have royalties associated with it, making its value undeterminable. These assets can even be gifted to institutions or organizations, not just individual people. They can also be placed in a trust, which is what happened to the other 50 percent of the rights to the works in this case.

Dividing up an asset in this way allows people to give to a cause or institution that a person believed strongly in as well as helping protect and ensure the financial future of a person's family. While these matters may seem complex, an experienced estate planning attorney can help New Jersey residents handle these matters.

If proper planning is in place, a person can gift these assets to a person or organization, even if they don't know they are to receive them. Proper estate planning can help ensure a person's wishes are fulfilled no matter who they intend to gift assets to.

Croatia Plans Changes to Exploit EU Regional Funds :: Balkan Insight

Regional development and EU funds minister Branko Grcic said on Wednesday that establishing two statistical regions, Continental and Adriatic, instead of the current three, will enable every part of Croatia to access EU money under equal conditions.

The Continental region will comprise 14 counties with about 2.5 million inhabitants while the seven coastal counties with approximately 1.5 million inhabitants will form the Adriatic region.

So far, the country has been divided already into three statistical regions. But the government agreed with the European Comission that the new solution, which will come into force on January 1 next year, will enable better use of EU development funds.

Foreign minister Vesna Pusic said that the EU's 2014-2020 budget allows Croatia to withdraw up to 14 billion euro if local authorities offer credible projects.

"That sum is approximately [equal to] one annual Croatian budget. Every city and place can develop with that money until 2020. Who doesn't develop by then will never develop," Pusic said.

However, the ruling party in the eastern region of Slavonia, the Croatian Democratic Assembly of Slavonia and Baranja, HDSSB, criticized the decision, claiming that it would harm Slavonia's ability to pull in European money.

"This is the politics of giving to the rich and taking from the poor," the HDSSB MP Dinko Buric said.

He said that the Slavonian local authorities won't have the financial ability to compete with the capital, Zagreb, which will form part of the Continental region.

The new statistical division of the country will not influence the current administrative organisation of Croatia, which is widely regarded as disfunctional and expensive.

The country of little more than 4 million inhabitants has 21 counties, 121 cities and 419 municipalities, each of which has its own budget and administration.

According to official data, about 40 per cent of the cities and municipalities can't finance themselves, so the state budget has to allocate money for them.

Incomes of local officials alone cost the country about 5 billion kuna (700 million euro) anually.

3 Marines punished for urinating on Taliban corpses

?

By Jim Miklaszewski and Courtney Kube, NBC News

WASHINGTON - The U.S. military on Monday dealt out punishment to three Marines for their roles in urinating on Taliban corpses, and were?expected to announce penalties against six soldiers in the Quran burning incident at Bagram Air Base that ignited deadly protests in Afghanistan.

Watch World News videos on NBCNews.com?

The Marine Corps announced that three Marines received non-judicial punishment for their roles in urinating on Taliban corpses in Afghanistan as well as for videotaping the incident.

A statement from the Marine Corps said they received the punishment for "violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice for their role in the desecration and filming of deceased Taliban that became public in January 2012."

As part of a plea deal, all three Marines pleaded guilty and will receive a permanent mark on their records that will impact any future promotions and re-enlistments.

They were all members of the Third Battalion, Second Marine Regiment or in units that were attached to the "3/2" during their deployment. Their names were not released.?

One non-commissioned officer pleaded guilty to a general order by?wrongfully posing for an unofficial photograph with human casualties and urinating on the body of a deceased Taliban soldier, which conduct was prejudicial to good order and discipline.

Another non-commissioned officer pleaded guilty to?wrongfully posing for an unofficial photograph with human casualties and?wrongfully video recording the incident.?

A staff non-commissioned officer pleaded guilty to?failing to report the mistreatment of human casualties by other Marines and?making a false official statement to a Naval Criminal Investigative Service investigator about the his knowledge of the video.

At least 2 more Marines are awaiting disciplinary action for their roles in setting a command climate that led to the urinating incident.

The incident took place during a counter-insurgency operation near Sandala, Musa Qala District in Helmand Province, Afghanistan around July 27, 2011.?

The investigation into the Quran burning reportedly found no ill intent on the part of the soldiers so none of the six will face criminal charges. ?The administrative punishment, however, will likely result in the end of their military careers.?

Report: 5 soldiers involved in Quran burning

The investigation against one sailor was dropped when it was determined he was simply ordered to drive the truck with the material to the burn site at the base.

The burning of the Muslim holy books in February sparked weeks of protests that led to 30 Afghan deaths. U.S. officials said at the time the books were mistakenly sent along with garbage for disposal after detainees had written messages in them.

According to The Wall Street Journal, officials in Afghanistan were bracing for public demonstration over what might be viewed as lenient punishment of the troops.
